Frequently Asked Questions

Why is aerial application better than ground application?

Aerial application offers distinct advantages in speed, timing, and efficiency that can’t be matched by a ground application. By taking advantage of optimal weather windows or to target insect pressures/flights, we treat fields that would be difficult for ground rigs to navigate. Additionally, by treating your field from above, aerial application helps protect your crop and soil by limiting ground traffic and lowers the risk of disease and weed transfer that can occur with in-field equipment. When timing matters, aerial application gives growers a major advantage. Ground rigs can take days to complete a job, but Vince Dusters can often cover the same field in minutes thanks to our diverse fleet and state-of-the-art technology.Another benefit to using aerial liquid applications is canopy penetration. Downwash and turbulence from the wing or rotor blades drive the product directly onto the crop, improving canopy coverage and reaching hard-to-hit areas like under leaves.

How can aerial application help my farm?

Our aerial spraying services are designed to boost crop production, support plant health, and improve profits. We treat a wide range of crops, including almonds, pistachios, grapes, corn, alfalfa, wheat, and more.

  • Nitrogen Application: Support strong early growth and overall plant health to help plants flourish through changing seasonal conditions.
  • Fungicide Application: Help prevent and manage disease while supporting efficient plant growth and nutrient absorption.
  • Insecticide Application: Protect crops from damaging pests and address existing insect pressure for improved cell growth.
  • Herbicide Application: Use pre-emergent and post-emergent applications to selectively manage invasive weed species.

Do you do aerial seeding or cover crop?

Cover crops are an effective way to improve soil health and field performance during the off-season. Compared to a ground rig, aerial seeding is more likely to produce a cleaner, more uniform stand because seed is applied from above without the disturbance of in-field rig equipment. Additional benefits include:

  • Reduced soil erosion and compaction
  • Increased soil organic matter over time
  • Weed suppression and reduced nitrogen leaching

How many acres can you spray in a day?

There are many factors that go into how many acres we can spray in a day. It depends on the specific application and the scope of the job. For more information, contact our team.

How much does aerial application cost?

Our prices remain competitive and depend on the scope of your application. Aerial application helps prevent yield loss caused by crop trampling and soil compaction from ground equipment, which can reduce yields by up to 5%.

Why is crop dusting called “aerial application”?

“Crop dusting” is a popular term that comes from the early history of agricultural aviation. In 1921, the first aerial treatment involved spreading lead arsenate dust over catalpa trees in Ohio to control sphinx moth larvae. While dust and powder applications are no longer used, the nickname stuck even as the industry evolved.

“Aerial application” is the more accurate modern term because today’s aircraft use both liquid and dry products utilizing innovative technology for precise applications. Over the last few decades, the industry has placed a strong emphasis on training, professionalism, and safety, so many pilots prefer to be called ag pilots or aerial applicators rather than “crop dusters.”

How long has Vince Dusters been in business?

Vince Dusters was established in 1955 and purchased by the Slikker family in 2010. Our family-owned and operated business provides aerial application services to farmers across Kern County.

Is aerial application safe?

Vince Dusters delivers professional aerial applications with safety as the priority. Agricultural aviation is subject to strict regulation by different state and federal agencies. To ensure we operate in compliance, we only use licensed and approved chemicals, and our pilots are properly trained and qualified to work with them. Our aircraft is designed with pilot safety in mind and equipped with advanced technology to improve placement and precision of products. Every application is planned carefully to reduce risk, and we maintain comprehensive records of each job.

What training do Vince Dusters pilots have?

Our pilots are fully licensed and highly qualified. Our pilots have completed the California Aircraft Pilot Pest Control Certificate exam, which is required to work in California. This includes testing on state laws and regulations, chemical calibration, and general knowledge of the aerial application process. To maintain their certification, pilots must also complete 20 hours of continuing education every two years. This allows them to stay current on the industry’s best practices.

Our pilots also hold professional affiliations in multiple industry associations, including the California Agricultural Aircraft Association and the National Aerial Applicators Association.

What types of aircraft do you use?

We operate several types of aircraft to match different field conditions. Our aircraft is equipped with state-of-the-art features ike GPS, flow control, and variable-rate technology for both liquid and dry applications.

  • Fixed-Wing Aircraft: We operate Air Tractors built specifically for agricultural aviation with modern innovation and safety features. Our fleet includes different models with varying engine configurations and payload capacities. Our fixed-wing aircraft is designed to provide broad coverage in minimal time.
  • Rotorcraft: Our helicopters can service areas that may be difficult or impractical for airplanes, including locations without a runway. Their exceptional maneuverability allows for precise work in irregular areas. Additionally, helicopters can often refuel and refill on-site, reducing airport trips.
  • UAS (Drones): These systems are similar to helicopters but less invasive. They use state-of-the-art technology for precise application in sensitive areas and around housing.
